Zenobia Perry was asked in 1963 by colleague Jim Field to write a piece for Darius Milhaud’s birthday concert in San Francisco. She studied with Milhaud at the University of Wyoming and at the Aspen Music Festival, beginning in 1949.  Four Mynyms was revised in 1968 for a concert given when Milhaud returned to France. The third movement uses the rhythm of the spiritual, “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot,” a reference to his going home. Various versions of the piece, for flute, oboe, and piano and for flute, clarinet in B-flat, and piano, have been performed in 1972, 1988, 1989, and 1997.

The version for flute, oboe, and piano is also available.
