On November 8, 2020, Melissa Givens gave a stunningly beautiful performance of Zenobia Powell Perry's Threnody Song Cycle, with pianist Genevieve Feiwen Lee at Pomona College. Melissa is Assistant Professor of Voice and Head of Voice Studies at Pomona College. Zenobia Powell Perry (1908-2004), was an African-American and Creek Indian composer whose music can be heard on Cambria Master Recordings.
The song cycle, based on the poetry of the African American poet Donald Jeffrey Hayes (1904-1991) was composed between 1968-1972 and has five movements: Threnody, Alien, Benediction, Poet, and Pastourelle.
